Anemometer
An instrument used for measuring the speed of the wind.
Climate
The average weather conditions in a place over a long period of time.
El Niño
A weather pattern that occurs in the Pacific Ocean. During this time, winds cause warm surface water from the equator to move east, toward Central and South America. This weather pattern can cause more rain than usual in South and Central America and in The United States.
La Niña
A weather pattern that occurs in the Pacific Ocean. In this pattern, strong winds blow warm water at the ocean’s surface from South America to Indonesia. As the warm water moves west, cold water from the deep rises to the surface near the coast of South America.
RADAR
An instrument used to detect precipitation by measuring the strength of the electromagnetic signal reflected back. RADAR = RAdio Detection And Ranging.
Thermometer
An instrument for measuring temperature.
Weather
A specific event that happens over a short period of time.
